“…(I)n those days, folks in small places were accustomed to being poor and didn’t expect to get rich, like they do now. For another, when people are working hard for the grit essentials – like enough to eat, and clothes for their kids, and a roof that’s tolerably sound – they’re apt to be goodhearted and understanding of one another. It’s only when they start flogging themselves to get things they don’t really need – like big cars, and fancy clothes, and a house bigger than the one next door – that they get aggravated and mean. At least, that’s the way it appears to me.”

True, very true... at least as far as people manage to get those said basics.
Now... when those basics aren't available the animal instincts take over and it's every animal for himself, downright to cannibalism if need be.
So either we can get all mankind to be lower middle-class without hope of getting any richer or we're doomed.
That was your point, wasn't it?
You really are a pessimist, girl...
LOL, dearie! Poor boys can be just as pricky as upper-middle-class suburban boys! And poor women just as bitchy.
This goes hand in hand with my favorite saying, "comparison is the enemy of contentment."
